WE1.5 Management of Anorectal trauma - A UK trauma centre based experience

Abstract Introduction and Aim The evidence base supporting the management of traumatic anorectal injuries is poor. Previous case series provide some general observations on decisions. aim current study was to describe largest UK experience trauma from a national major centre. Methods Retrospective review prospective data, collected systematically as part routine practice locally, performed. Data were extracted mechanism trauma, immediate hospital care, diagnostics operative management. Outcome data extracted, where available, follow up. are presented descriptively in format. Results 37 patients (35 male vs 2 female) with injury between March 2012 December 2021. median age 34 (6–93), 20 (54%) penetrating (11 stabs, 5 GSW, other) 17 (46%) blunt (13 RTA, 4 other). Median Injury severity score 16. Of cases treated, there 18 intra peritoneal (8 both extra) 16 extra injuries. 30 had defunctioning stoma (DS), 8 primary repair (PR) (with or without DS). Mean length stay 27 days. 15 out have GI continuity restored, which 13 water-soluble contrast physiology preoperatively. Conclusions Traumatic uncommon within practice, affect predominantly young men high morbidity. In majority stomas still mainstay treatment. Primary extraperitoneal viable procedure.
